We often hear pet owners say, \u201cI try, but my dog hates it, and I\u2019m not even sure I\u2019m doing it right.\u201d What\u2019s really going on in most households?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many dogs aren\u2019t used to having their mouths touched, so they resist. Some won\u2019t even let you see their teeth. And that\u2019s why a lot of pet owners eventually give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s very common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a dog hasn\u2019t been conditioned to accept having their mouth touched from an early age, it becomes a real challenge later. From what I see in my practice, less than 20% of pet owners are brushing their dogs\u2019 teeth properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interviewer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less than 20%? That low?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes. But just because many people aren\u2019t doing it doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s okay to skip it. The biggest mistake is starting straight away with a toothbrush. That overwhelms both the dog and the owner. Instead, begin by letting your dog lick a dental gel or gently wiping their teeth with a dental sheet. Rushing into brushing often leads to frustration\u2014and ultimately, people give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You mentioned earlier that this is a crucial topic. What happens when brushing is infrequent or not done properly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, it\u2019s essential to understand the difference between plaque and tartar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plaque is the soft buildup, and tartar is the hardened version?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly. After meals, food residue forms plaque on the teeth. If left untreated for 24 to 48 hours, it hardens into tartar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So tartar forms in just a day or two?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, and while brushing can remove plaque, it cannot remove tartar. Think of tartar as a hardened cluster of bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes daily brushing sound non-negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It truly is. Just one good brushing a day can significantly reduce tartar formation. Left alone, tartar can lead to periodontal disease, bone loss, and even systemic infections as the bacteria enter the bloodstream. It\u2019s not just about the mouth\u2014it affects the entire body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see now why you said this was such an important issue\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There used to be a commercial in Japan that said, \u201cCelebrities live or die by their teeth.\u201d Well, I think dogs do too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how should someone start? Can they just bring their dog in to be checked?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, people usually turn to the internet first. But online, accurate and inaccurate information are mixed together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interviewer:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the more you research, the more confusing it gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We call that \u201cDr. Google.\u201d Sure, some correct advice exists, but there\u2019s plenty of misinformation too. Unfortunately, there are a lot of \u201cquack doctors\u201d online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even online vets can be sketchy, huh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly. If you\u2019re ever unsure or just curious, please don\u2019t hesitate to come to a real clinic. Vet hospitals aren\u2019t just for emergencies or vaccinations\u2014they\u2019re also here for routine care like dental checks or even weight monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interviewer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So like a family doctor\u2014for dogs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes. But I understand\u2014people often think clinics are only for when something\u2019s wrong. That perception needs to change. If you stop by on your regular walk, your dog starts to associate the clinic with positive experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So you\u2019re saying to make the animal hospital part of the walk?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Muratani<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly. But that also means we, as clinics, need to work harder to be approachable. Instead of a place where people sit anxiously, we try to create an environment more like a friendly caf\u00e9\u2014warm, relaxed, and filled with smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step is helping your dog get comfortable with having their mouth touched. Don\u2019t start with a toothbrush\u2014start with a tasty dental paste and get them used to the sensation. The goal is to make it a fun experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If it feels like a chore or punishment, the dog won\u2019t cooperate. You have to take it slow and build up in stages\u2014rushing never works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
